Interview Skills for Interviewees

(1-DAY SESSION)

PREPARING FOR THE INTERVIEW

Participants will prepare for their role play interviews using the following methodology:

  • Key points to communicate in the interview in terms of behaviors;
  • Responses to most common questions;
  • Framing responses in terms of this interview (job description, competencies, organizational mission, vision and values);
  • How to clarify questions to discern the intention of the interviewer;
  • How to prepare responses on the spot (use of notepad, organizing responses, etc.).

ALIGNING TO THE MISSION STATEMENT AND CORE COMPETENCIES

They will explore:

  • what a mission statement is,
  • the purpose of the organization’s mission statement,
  • how to identify competency indicators contained within the mission statement,
  • how to align to them.

BEHAVIOUR EVENT INTERVIEWING (BEI)

They will prepare for behaviour event interview by learning:

  • to respond effectively to questions.  What to say, not say, how to say it
  • if responses are valid and relevant.
  • to clearly target organizational competencies.
  • to provide enough detail and depth in the responses.
  • what past experiences could be valid?

BEST PRACTICES (TIPS AND TRICKS)

Participants will explore the best practices and common mistakes of interviewing.

EFFECTIVE NOTE TAKING

They will explore both conservative and innovative note taking styles.  They will explore the advantages of note taking using key words and of mind mapping.

READING AND RESPONDING TO NON VERBAL BEHAVIOR

They will learn how to read the body language of the interviewer (i.e. if s/he is satisfied with the response or if s/he needs more.)

ROLE PLAY INTERVIEWS

They will practice lessons learned, their newly acquired  skills and strategies using a role play interview:

  • establish rapport and trust;
  • maintain composure;
  • respond effectively to questions;
  • manage the exchange effectively by preparing and adapting.

They will then receive feedback from their colleagues.  The group will then brainstorm lessons learned to improve for the next time.

COMMUNICATION TIPS

STATE, EXPECTATIONS AND SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECIES

Participants will explore the impact of their internal dialogue and beliefs about others (i.e. the interviewers) preceding and during any interview.

RAPPORT AND TRUST

Participants will learn and practice skills to establish deep trust at the unconscious level with verbal, nonverbal and symbolic behaviour.

CREDIBILITY

Participants will explore the four groupings of behaviours which enhance or diminish their credibility. They will adopt the approaches will improve their personal credibility.

DISC

Participants will learn to adapt to different personalities.

NON-VERBAL BEHAVIOUR

Participants will learn to recognize and flex to the preferred communication channels of the interviewee – visual, auditory and kinesthetic (V.A.K.).

PLAN

Each participant will make a plan to practise their interview skills and strategies and develop specific competencies.
